Evaluation

In the thriller project, my group have made an opening sequence about child abduction. We have 3 characters in the opening sequence; mother (Cassie), child and stalker (Abu Bakar). In our opening sequence, we are focusing on 2 parts, which is the part of the stalker and the part the child and the mum. To make our product as relative and realistic as possible, it had to go through many editing, camera shots, adding and featuring with the help of the Mac OS X. In the opening sequence we have two a mixture of sounds. Like when the camera is on the stalker, we have non-diegetic sounds. But when it comes to the mother and child we have normal diegetic sounds of like when the child is playing and when the mother is laughing even when there is a small concentrated amount of non-diegetic sounds. You have this in many opening sequences of real life thriller films. This method has a curious effect on the audience, these simple edits are what makes the audience want to watch the rest of the film and catches their interest. Editing credits is also another convention, which is used in many films and there is also an impact of relativity to real media. It can give many opening sequences an effect depending on where and what part of the opening sequence you display it. This can be simply created with the help of the Live Type. In our media product where we hide the identity of the stalker, this has another affect of questioning the audience and gets them curious as well. The mother in our media product is very young, this can challenge many media sources of stereotyping young mothers. I believe all these points I have mentioned is what makes a real media product. Using the simple dramas that happen in reality is what you can use or manipulate to produce your own real media.

As I said before, the mother in the opening sequence looks quiet young and reality she is just the elder sister of the little child. But the audience will believe that she is teenager who somehow became a mother at an early age. These thoughts can lead to stereotyping teenagers in the urban area that give birth in an early age. You wont have these kind of situations or drama happening in on the country site. Another stereotypical moment is the blacked out stalker. Many stalkers in real life dress dark close or camouflage to fade away in their surroundings and they dress like this, because it gives them an advantage to make a quick escape and on top they where gloves obviously to leave no fingerprints. Stalkers can make scene look very mysterious which is what many audience get interested and curious in. Again as every stalker, we have a male stalker. It would be very unusual if the stalker is a female.

If we made a film out of our opening sequence, it wouldn’t be really and internationally distributed film. The reason for this is simply because our film just focuses on common problems that occur in the urban world. If anything, it would be based in the UK. It wouldn’t really catch the interest of the big 6 multi million distributors such ‘universal pics’. It would be a reasonable film to release a little preview on the internet like YouTube or MySpace. This can be useful for promotion or even research before starting a proper film, which would hit box offices. After wesee a good success in the cinemas, it would not be a bad idea to record it on DVD’s.
A relevant audience for this kind of film would be teenagers living in the urban areas and also middle-aged adults, single parents, mum dad etc. All people in the middle class section can afford a little ticket to the cinema. Why not even people such as a couple who are on a date on a Friday or Saturday night out in central London and walk past the cinema and see this big billboard saying ‘ Happily Ever After’. When it comes to gender, it does make a different like for the female section might be more interested a film involving and starring a mother and the relationship between her and her son. Do not forget that the film ends with the shocked face of the child. Let us just say for example a student named Mary studying her A-levels and has a part time job in Oxford Street at H&M and it is a Friday the day she is paid and goes out with her friends from college. Plus the usual thing they do on a Friday is go to the cinemas Hollywood, CineWorld , or the VUE you name it. They are going to want to watch one of the latest films released and you have the big billboard poser saying ‘Happily Ever After’.

The most suitable promotion for this film is probably billboards, posters, internet etc. The genre of the film could be popular at that moment in the market and could be filling gaps. Another way could be handing out leaflets to aware people on the streets like London. If the film did catch the eyes and attention of big companies and organisations, then it would be more effective to get star actress to lead the mother figure. A good star such as Keira Knightly would be perfect because of her British urban accent and middle aged motherly figured body. She also looks vey interesting when she is in fear, which is one of her strongest features, especially when she pulls that sexy emotional face. This can probably complete the films requirements.

Making this opening sequence has been a great educable experience and got me to learn about the film producing industry. First, I thought it would take months to make the opening sequence because usually a normal can take years to complete. Another thing that was very great was all those technologies we got to use. Such as the camera we use to film and all its different features and methods of recording. The second film was taking the clips back to rooms where all Apple Macs were, which was where we got to use the LiveType and SoundTrack to edit, cut, give special affect and credits to each clip. And at the end where we composite all the films, where the final bit was added was what made the whole opening sequence look very professional and like a real film. Obviously, we also had to use the internet for blogging keeping the audience up to date with everyday’s process and struggles. Blogging isn’t really something for because it involves relating media to journalism which are two different worlds to me. The basic result was that to make a great film or any film you will need teamwork, great communication and a force of commitment, which keeps a group together, even after arguments. Everyone has a role to stick to in a group and if you don’t you will let down the whole group, which can end up fatale. The best thing to do was to show dedication and the willing to learn and even make mistakes and pick up from them mistakes. You should also make every day, hour, minute, second, step as educable as possible. This is all what makes a great film and should go for every other subject. Know that technology is the main essence of making as relative as possible. I do not think without the Apple Mac it would have been possible to create the opening film.

shot list blog

27th January

Today me another member of my group met in Mare Street to film half of the opening of the group thriller, since two members of the group did not show up I did the filming and the other group member acted with her younger brother. We chose to film in a children’s playground as we wanted to capture innocence in our thriller. During the filming we captured a range of shots, some of these included extreme close ups, extreme , long shots, mid shots, tracking , panning and hand held camera.
We filmed a series of scenes which included an establishing shot, the child playing on the slide etc, the child and its mother holding hands and walking into the park and also clips from the p.o.v. of the mother and of the stalker in the bushes. These shots were vital in building suspense.
When we had finished the filming we returned to college to begin uploading our footage to the computer.

thriller evaluation

Thriller Evaluation
I feel that my media thriller uses the traditional conventions of a thriller because, it has various methods of suspense, i.e. the first scene of the thriller opening introduces the setting there is a slow panning shot used to introduce the empty park, the audience anxiously wait to see a character introduced. There was added suspense in the thriller as the ‘predator’/stalker’s identity is revealed slowly, first we see footsteps in a park, an extreme close up is used and loud digetic sound of the stalker’s feet crunching on twigs is used to highlight the fact that danger is expected. We also have several point of view shots which is usually common amongst thrillers as this is known to build tension specifically when the audience know that danger alerts, we have point of view shot throughout the film, this is mostly used when the stalker watches the child from behind the bushes. The non digetic sound to emphasise the different points of view is also used, when we are seeing things form the stalkers view behind the bushes very intense harsh but also slow sound is used, but when we see things from the child’s point of view a gentle, soft mellow sound is used like a nursery rhyme, this highlights the child’s vulnerability, I feel that the hit film, ‘http://www.google.co.uk/url?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dsfout_rgPSA&ei=RurMSfiSL8i4jAef8ozlCQ&sa=X&oi=video_result&resnum=5&ct=thumbnail&usg=AFQjCNFGxz3mH-pvVjtkmuATL2gZ34PPhwThe Shining influenced my thriller as in the Shinning there were various point of view shots used whilst the boys was being followed, this is similar to the young boy being watched by the stalker behind the bushes in my thriller.
In my thriller, there is a young child who the audience is left to assume is to be abducted, but hints are in place which lead the audience to think that the person watching this child intends to cause harm. The stalker is a young black male who in modern society is stereotypically most likely to commit crimes . “There have been many well-publicised cases around the country, where gangs of youths have terrorised housing estates or individual youngsters have wreaked their own brand of havoc on areas.” This quote was taken from :http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/1932803.stm.The child is very young and vulnerable, these two roles live up to many common stereotypes.
The best suited media institution for this thriller would be a small independent release in the U.K., this would be because the filming quality would be more suited to this, I don’t believe that the filming equipment provided for us was some thing that could be used to produce a big Hollywood Blockbuster I would also want this to be a small independent release in the UK because I feel that the British public would be able to relate to the thriller more and lots of profit from the thriller would be made because of this, If this was to be released in Hollywoood money would be lost as the settings and scenarios would only pertain to the British public, non of the aspects of this thriller are universal, as a result of this I feel that the best distribution for this thriller would be a small independent release in the U.K.. The equipment for a Hollywood blockbuster would have been far more expensive and as a result of this would have been able do far more developed to do this, we also didn’t have the funding to produce something for the big screen as we are doing this for a college project and a by recent research I have done I have found that Hollywood blockbusters need millions even sometimes billions to produce a film of such substantial quality.
The target audience for this thriller would be a working class teenager (student) living in London, this would be because the cast of this thriller were from the same background, the audience would find the surroundings and the cast familiar and it could be something they could relate to, if an upper middleclass C.E.O. ,living in Kensington was to watch this thriller opening, they may not find it as interesting as there would be nothing that they could relate to, this could include the surroundings, i.e. the park with graffiti or littered floor, they also may not be able to relate to the situation, or this may not have any significance to them. Someone who I feel would be the ideal target audience for this thriller would be a working class teenager (17) living in East London who enjoys watching thrillers or horror movies maybe a girl who is a tom boy.

If this thriller was to become a hit I would choose to advertise it in on public billboards in high streets and prime shopping locations, to attract teenagers. I would also like to advertise my thriller through TV advertisements specifically on channels that are most watched by teenagers, music channels, i.e. mtv base, trouble etc. I would also post messages on websites such as MySpace and face book where millions of teenagers visits and log onto every day. I would also put posters outside prime fast food restaurants such as K.F.C. Mc Donald’s, Burger King were many teenagers visit on a daily basis. I would also want to advertise this thriller opening in cinemas before opening credits of other horror or thriller films.
During the making of this thriller, I have learned how to use a camera and a tripod effectively. To set up a tripod securely (also able to hold a camera), How to film using the five second rule. I have learned how to record regular blogs and to plan the lessons ahead, i.e. during the making of this thriller opening, I have had to meet up with the other members of my group in and out of my lesson time, we have had to arrange locations where we could meet to film the sequence. Then I learned how use final cut pro to upload shot footage onto the computer, then to log and capture, then finally to adjust images in slow motion, to add special effects, to cut and insert scenes into chronological order, and to put appropriate music and sound effects on that match the thriller sequence to create suspense and tension.
Looking back at planning this thriller opening, I feel that a lot has been learned, in the beginning my group and I made a storyboard, this consisted of drawing boxes and putting detailed pictures in chronological order of the sequence we would eventually put together, some things that we planned to put in our sequence, were not actually in our thriller opening, this was for various reasons due to the fact that we only had two minutes to fit everything in, i.e. we originally planned to have the child abducted by the stalker, however at the end of our thriller we decided to leave it to our audience to guess what happened by ending with an extreme close up of the child with a very frightened and shocked look on his face. The audience could either believe that the child had seen something which frightened him or was eventually approached by the stalker, this was also for added suspense. My group and I had expected that two minutes would be more than enough for filming, this was when we were planning ,however when we started filming we found it very difficult to condense the footage we had taken down to two minutes. We were very ambitious and had many good ideas, but when it came to filming, many of our ideas and shots had to be taken out to shorten it. Filming time was less than we had initially expected, we were told that we would need four hours of filming time, instead in total we only did one hour of filming.

thriller evaluation

Before making our thriller there was a long process of planning and practicing before we could create the final project. Although the planning did take quite some time without is we wouldn’t have known what to do when it came to filming the thriller. Before we went straight into making the thriller our first task was to watch some documentaries and take notes on things such as edits, sound and camera shots. Although it may seem fun to be spending our media lesson watching television it was also very hard as there was a lot of paperwork and written work to do. Even watching the documentaries was sometimes tricky as we were not actually watching them; we were observing them and having to take notes constantly. Apart from watching documentaries we also watched thrillers such as ‘The Shining’ which helped us to understand thrillers a little more easily.

We learned many different types of thrillers such as action thrillers, crime thrillers, horror thrillers etc. By learning that there were many different types of thrillers it helped us to decide what kind of thriller ours would be. Once we knew what kind of thriller it was going to be it was time to start planning it. Firstly we had to practice using the cameras. To get this practice we made a couple short films. The first one was with cards in which we focused on different camera shots used to get the best effect. In this lesson we also learned how to edit. The second film was about opening a door and walking into a room. In this filming we focused more on ‘match cuts’. These short films were a success. They even helped us to understand the Apple Mac computers a little more as these computers are a bit more advanced to what I am normally used to.

Before making the thriller we had to pitch our ideas to the class first and get their feedback on what they thought of it. To film the thriller we had to use two locations, but when looking at the thriller it looks like one. This was done by editing. Without learning the basic skills on the practice films we would have not been able to make the thriller.

Before the thriller was made we also had to think about the basic things such as mise- en – scene. We decided to film the thriller in a park. To make the park more intense it had to look neglected therefore we had to film early in the morning when nobody was there. Having an empty park really helped with the camera shots. Because it was empty we could have long shots of the park showing that is was neglected. Even when doing close ups it was good to not have any random people walking behind or in front of the camera.

Using things such as final cut pro, live type and soundtrack seemed really hard at first because we had never used them before, however by using them when making the other films we had a basic idea of how to use them and it progressed from there. Once the editing was done the thriller had to be put onto a ‘blog’, which is also new to me as I have never used it before, however it was very simple to use. By doing this thriller I have learnt how to film edit and blog, which to me before all seemed quite challenging.
Our thriller also represents social groups. There is a stalker who we immediately assume is male, stereotyping men as stalkers. The other representation is the sister and the boy. Most people would see it as a young teenage mother and child. The audience will obviously see it differently to what I see it because they immediately want to stereotype everyone they see.

The ideal audience for this thriller would be for anyone really, preferably for people over the age of 18 though as the may be some scenes in the thriller that may not be suitable for younger viewers. Anyone over the age of 60 I think would not really enjoy this type of film, the ideal age would be someone in there early to mid twenties. A typical person who fits into our target audience would be ‘Claire 20 is at university studying to be a primary school teacher and loves adding new DVD’s to her collection. Rather than being out every night she would rather snuggle up at home with some popcorn and watch a good movie.’ Or possibly ‘ Dave 26, works in retail and enjoys playing football on Saturdays, but also likes going to the cinema and watching a good scary film, his favorite type of films are horror thrillers. These kind of ideal people who fit our target audience seem more like working class to middle class people rather than upper class.

If this thriller was to be distributed, I do not think it would be a big Hollywood blockbuster. I think it would only be seen and heard of is if it went straight to DVD release. If it was a big movie it would be in the cinema at least however films do not have to be shown in the cinema to be big hits. Films such as football factory proved this theory, as this film went straight to DVD release and is still a very popular film today. Rather than be a well known film all over the world and in Hollywood I think that this type of film will only be well known over in Britain.

To attract our target audience rather than have a big Hollywood star I think just having a famous British actor will suite the film nicely. To advertise the thriller I think it would most likely be advertised on television and on billboards. As its not a big Hollywood blockbuster there would be no need for it to be advertised in the cinema, it will not be known worldwide because of the advertising we
would be using however it would still be known.

Overall I think that making the thriller was a big success and went really well. Watching other thrillers such as ‘The shining’ really helped as well. When watching this film we focused on the things that would keep us on the edge of our seats buzzing with anticipation. These things were things such as chilling music, close ups of the face, extreme close ups of eyes and extreme long shots to show that the characters in the film are alone as there is no one else around them. By learning about these aspects and what affect they have on the audience it helped us to decided which ones to put in our thriller. Just like ‘The shining’ our thriller had the chilling music and the close ups that keep you on the edge of your seat and asking for more. Without having studied other thrillers and taken a closer look into what a thriller must include I do not think that making our thriller would have been achievable.

Thriller Evaluation.

Thriller opening sequence Evaluation.

"Happily Ever After"

In memories to other thrillers that we have been shown by our media teacher – Mr Andrew e.g. The Shining, In which we have also analyse together the useful effect in the thrillers such as Light, Mise-en-scene ,settings and costumes. Also I have seenThe Bourne identity action thriller that I analyzed myself. Watching the real thriller media product, has built up our knowledge of how a thriller should look like and also it give use the experience of how to use thriller effect effectively. After watching these examples, we were asking to make our own thriller effectively, in my group we have made good use of the thriller example which we have been shown.
We have applied techniques such as lightning mise-en-scene, costume and location to our own thriller film in order to create a strong thriller opening sequence which we also think it will challenge the real media products. These effect that my group used ,we believe with the idea that we have been given from other thriller that we have used them appropriately and effectively where they are all needed so that it will make it look like thriller made by professionals. In the Shinning that we have watch, we see how they use different types of shots like the bird’s eye view, long shots to create a marvellous effect. Also I have watch one other thriller film, The borne identity and analyze the effect as an extra work to give me more understanding of how to use these effects. This has been applied to our thriller opening sequence to make it professional also watching other thriller mention above has help us to choose the best location for our thriller, we chose a park with a lot of bush in it for our location which reminds me of Grizzle park the thriller movie. The location of the bush can be seen as part of our Mise-en-scene because the effect that it created for thriller is seen as a perfect example of a mise-en-scene that a thriller should have.
My group has use different camera shots to build up some effect in our thriller. We used close-up shot in order to see closely the expression our characters. Using all these affect for our thriller opening sequence which we have placed in order which they are meant to be, I think there should be a great competition between our thriller film and some other thriller movie made by professionals or the thrillers which we have been given example of in the lesson because there is effect that they have use in there thriller movies that we also haven’t use when necessary. Therefore, I think there should be no big different between our thriller and the real thriller.
However, the representation of our media product has created an immense importance effect to be able to manipulate the taste of our target audience. In our thriller we have use the contrast of people with a huge age gap to make our audience feel remorse for the victim of our thriller .Basically, we used a little boy of the age of 6 whose race is white who is been watch by a black big guy (stalker) whom age prediction is 18, so there is good contrast representation of our characters .This little boy playing with his mum in the park which they were both being watch by this gigantic black guy. The contrast characters will help put the audience in suspense of what is going to happen to this happy family. In addition, the little boy in our thriller looks vulnerable because of his age; the impression that the little boy is innocent will come to the thought of our audience. Also there is going to be a stereotype comment from the audience about the big guy (stalker) in our thriller.
Looking back to our media product, we can see that it has different important races (black and white) in the movie; this may help our product to get pass UK and may be distributed around the world by the Hollywood blockbuster. Also we have use the effect which may also be use by the Hollywood film production, there should be an acceptance of our thriller product because of the content and the effect we have use in it. Also it should be on a DVD release and it should also be shown in the cinemas because my group has made this in a professional structure.
We’ve based out target audience to those who consume media product ,those who go to cinema ,couples could be seen as an example of our target audience ,because when they go to a place like the cinema to watch our thriller ,if they get to the effective part of the thriller when watching it ,this may give them the motion of cuddliness if the female gets carried away by the movie as we all know that men are stronger them women. Also our media production is targeting to the audience of the age of 13 and above because children below this age might find it stronger for them to watch. Our thriller is both for male and the female but mostly for the female, also our opening sequence may attract the middle class because of the characters we have use in the film.
The character in our thriller opening sequence will help attract out various audience. The little vulnerable boy which we have used in our thriller opening will create a sympathetic sensation towards the innocent boy, this will make them carry on watching our movie to know what is going to happen to the little boy, In contrast they will also want to know what happen to the stalker whether he gets arrested or he survive in what he is up to. Also this will put our audience in suspense of what will be the reaction of the boy’s mum. Putting all these establishments of our thriller suspense together it should be able to attract a huge collection of people.
To help market our thriller we could make the trailer of our thriller, then put it on the phone and send it to friends and family or we could also advertise this in every UK cinema for people that love going to the cinema see it also we could spread the news with the word of mouth. Lastly, because there is a huge amount of people who uses the internet these days, we could advertise our thriller on the internet campaign, taking all this procedure is sure that our thriller opening sequence will be popular and be profitable for us.
After construction this media opening sequence product, We had learnt a lot about technologies .I have learnt how to use the camera to take different types of shots e.g. Long shot bird’s eye shot etc. also We have learnt how to film with timing and what location suits different film product .We have also learnt how to set up Tripod and how to change the height when needed. In addition, it has helped me to build up my acting experience which could also be used whenever a task that includes acting is been set. Even though, there were some problem when using Final cut pro, Livetype and the soundtrack. We have been able to pass through the task. With these difficulties that we had face during the Final cut pro, Livetype and soundtrack at least that gave us the experience of how to use these things. Also, we have an experience on how to edit and choosing the right sound for our thriller.
The internet has been so useful for us, it has helped us to be able to put out shots through it and also help us to be able to edit the shots which we have taken .We’ve been able to download our Final cut into our blog up plans and also this could be transfer to YouTube which if it does, it will expand the prospective audience for our media product.
Finally, I have learnt a lot from this task, starting from how to bring up an idea of a thriller or any other movie genre. When my group was making plans of what our opening sequence is going to be. Also during the filming I learned what kind of locations that suits different film genre especially the one which we have just finishes. This recent task has made me understood that when filming you could take a lot of shots and match cut them so that they can make a sense. During the film making process, I have learned how to use different shots and panning and tilting techniques. Though it may be hard getting this things right but has given me the experience of how they are used in case on a similar task that comes my way. This task has given me an interest in media and may also make me carry on in my university levels hopefully.

making the thriller complete

In todays lesson we had to make the final touches to the thriller to make it complete. The only thing left to do was to make the writing on the credits slightly bigger. Rather than open up live type and re-do all the credits we simply enlarged them, so that although that the background of the credits was cut down a bit it made the writing look alot bigger.
Once we finished the credits we saved the work and then uploaded it to the blogger. This took some time as there were a few complications but we got there in the end.
Overall i think the thriller turnder out very well considering it was only me and patrice truely working on it. We thought that due to the grouping situation we would be caught behing on the work but i think attending the workshops help us so that we didnt fall behind. It is now a major relief to have finished the thriller and our next task is to write the evaluation, which we shall do next lesson.

Editing

12/02/09
The aim of today's lesson was to start putting the stalker scenes with the park scenes and cutting and moulding them.
In today's lesson I arrived late as I had a dental appointment, when I arrived Ahmed was designing credits and Cassie was putting the scenes together, this involved cutting the scenes down to fit the two minute limit, I then joined her and we had to log and capture, we had to cut out a large amount of the sequence as we had half an hour of filming time and had to condense it into two minutes. We eventually managed to cut the sequence down to ten minutes and we also had to select the best shots, to make the sequence come to life.

thriller final

Final filming

10/02/09
Today ab, Cassie and I came to the lesson, our aim was to film the stalker shots, we chose to do this in a park as we wanted to capture lots of greenery, the stalker would hide behind this greenery watching his prey, this would also provide us with lots of natural sound effects making the thriller more realistic. We went to a local park in Angel but on arrival we discovered that closed, so we decided to do this filming in greenery opposite the college. We wanted a number of shots, first we shot extreme close ups of the stalkers feet walking towards the park carefully not revealing the stalkers identity. We then took close ups of the stalker's hands moving the bushes to get a closer look at the prey, this was still done to preserve the identity of the reader. We finally did a tilt establishing shot of the stalker but from the back which added suspense this was done slowly to capture the tension. The first two shots we took we done with a hand held camera  to indicate intensity, the third shot was done using a tripod  this proved to be more effective using the tripod as we got an accurate picture of the stalker.

Editing on LiveType

After long filming we finally got to the editing part which was done on LiveType on the Apple Mac. Because I never used the LiveType ever before, i received a lot of help from Nick, Andrew and Annabelle. But it didn't took me that long to get the grip of it, as long as you know the simple basics and tools. LiveType allows you to make use of 5 options which are livefonts, fonts, textures, objects and affects. And from there you can pick whatever font you like. What me and the group wanted was something which is a bit related to handwritings of a little child. So what me and Abubakar done was go first through every font and category. After long searching we have decided to use the "Itchy" font from the livefont option in the category "collectors edition. The original one has a white background, but instead of white we have decided to change it to black to make the opening sequence look more mysterious. After editing the credits on LiveType and rendering the clips we moved on to work on the soundtrack, but which was not done by me. It took place on the monday workshop between half term which i couldn't come to. But thanks to Patrice, Abubakar and Cassie, the  soundtrack and editing was all done which brings our opening sequence finally to a completed stage. I hope you all enjoy the opening sequence.

Day of filming

After a little group discussion, we have decided to name the title of our final opening sequence "Happily Ever After". Another trick is to display the title right at the end  instead of showing it right in the beginning. This can give the opening sequence an exciting effect. The film was located basically in a night near Homerton hospital. The role of the stalker is given to Abubakar as you can see in the credit and the mother is played by Cassie along with her little brother (the child that gets abducted). The camera and directing has been by Patrice.  And finally editing was left to me.

Half Term Workshop

Today our aim was to attend half term workshop to finish off our thriller video this would include putting our two viewpoints together (the stalker and mother and child), and also to make sound adjustments , I arrived late, to find that Cassie had made various improvements on our thriller, she had finished off putting all scenes together so they began to make sense. meanwhile I discovered that Ahmed did not arrive, and Abdul was continuously disruptive and did not show any interest in the work, and had to be warned to stop eating and disrupting other students who were hard at work. He had vaguely chosen any sound which was what he was assigned to do, which did not help us in our progress in the thriller and also he had not seen the thriller to be able to find a suitable soundtrack that accommodated it. Never the less Cassie and I continued to find sounds, these sounds were to emphasise  the view point of the mother and child, this sound were similar to a nursery rhyme and was very calm, quiet and repetitive  and the aim was to try and create empathy for the child particularly towards the end. Contrary to this the stalkers music was very dramatic and made you think that danger was ahead. This made the scenes come alive, making it easier for the audience to tell whether they were looking at the stalkers point of view or the mother and child. By the end of the lesson Cassie and I had managed to construct the thriller and put together two soundtracks that ran throughout the sequence.

Thriller Final Cut

    24/2/09

We finished editing our thriller on monday, but we only had to make credit bigger. In todays media lesson we went to get our hard drive to finish our thriller off finally. We ask for the help of the teacher on how to make our credit bigger,h showed us how to make it bigger and he left .We made the credit bigger to about %70 which makes it look a lot better. We are going to upload our final cut video into our blogging to prove that what we have done so far on our thriller.

Half term media work shop

Just befor half term ,my group decided to come on monday over that half term holiday.Just me and Cassie twere there to finish off the editing although Patrice came in late like around 12 .One of the media staff member came to see our work and gave us a tip what is needed to be done ,he told us how we have to slow down some of the parts of the stalker so that the be an effect that the stalker is up to something .We did so ,we slow the movement down to %50 this gave it a better effect.
After that i went to our classroom where we keep our folders and i took the sounds out of my folder that i choose the previouse lesson for our thriller, but it was qiute unfortunate that Cassie wasn't impress with the sound i have picked even with the opinion of the teacher on the sound which they alo think the sound which i have choosen are ok.This is what got me angry a little bit because it seems that what ever i do for the group their not pleased with because they think they are too smart ,even if they are at least give other people chance to do something as well.So this got me messing about because i felt exceptional even thought my desire wants to help and feel among.

Filming,Editing and choosen of Sound

In our last two lesson just before half term ,my group got together in the classroom and decided to finish off our filming even though Ahmed wasn't there because he had to go to the doctors ,we still manage to do the filming with three people.
However, when we got out side to find our location in the rain ,we found a park opposite Sainsbury in Angel which fits the best location for our filming because it has all the Mise-En-Scene that we need e.g the bushes etc.It was quite unfortunate that the park that we went to was loched so we manage find ourselves a new location that is near our college.
We had to do the filming in the rain,Cassie and Patrice were filming me the (Stalker). In the rain while it was all mudy and wet, i had to do difficult things ,i was walking through the hard bushes, clothes was dirty ,shoes was dirty and socked with water leaves all over my faces above all i got myself injured which got me going to see the doctors the next day.I had no choice other than to do the filming for me and for the people in my group ,because really and truely i wouldn't want my group to fail this task or geting a lower grades overall.
After we had finish filming ,I went to clean myself off and go back to the classroom ,when i got to the classroom i saw Patrice and Cassie editing the film the we had made,Sir Andrew our teacher told me that it will be of immense help if i make the sound,it was just only me that was choosing the sound that day ,so i choose the sound that i thing will match the film that we had created ,i tried my best to pick at least 10 to 12 sound but the sound can't be decided that it is the right sound for the film unless you see the film and insert it after editing the film. However,i picked the best sounds that i think its suitable for our film.

finishing the thriller

On monday, even though it is half term there was a media workshop on run by the teachers to help students catch up on some of their work and finish their thrillers. Me and my group decided that if we were to finish the thriller on time we had to attend the media workshop. We decided to meet up early so that we had plenty of time to do the thriller. When i got to the college at the set time only one member of my group turned up. This was AB. Patrice came in at about 11 because she was running a  bit late.Ahmed failed to turn up. Although AB turned up he failed to help me with any of the work, he prefered to wonder off ,eat, muck around and talk to other groups. Although i did not recieve any help from AB, i got more work done on my own. When patrice did turn up rather than wonder around she came straight up to me and asked about the work. She showed and intrest and wanted to know how she could help improve the work. Together we put the soundtrack onto the thriller and sorted out the levels so that the sound flowed better.
In the previous lesson before half term me and Patrice just continued editing the thriller. We placed all the right clips in order and cut them down alot so that the fitted in the two minute time space.
In the workshop, by myself i managed to put in all the credits, cut down the film, and even start putting some sound in. I also put some of the scenes in the film in slow motion. The scenes that are in slow motion are the only seen when we see the stalker and things from his point of view. When putting the sound in partrice turned up and helped me. AB had chosen some sounds that he thought would match the thriller however they didnt match at all so me and Patrice went through sound pro again and chose the sounds that we thought matched our thriller. We found two different sounds that matched our thriller. One was for when we see the stalker and the other sound was for when we see the mother and child. Once me and Patrice had made our final decisions on the sound we added them to the thriller.
The thriller is now finished. The only thing we really want to change about it is to make the font on the credits a little bit bigger, but we will do that when we get back from half term.

filming and editing

In yesterdays lesson we filmed the rest of the thriller. This last bit of the thriller was the part where we see the stalker walking through the bushes. We do not actually see the stalkers face as we still want to keep his identity hidden to create more suspense. We mainly see cloes ups of the stalkers hands and feet crushing the bushes as he is trying to get through them.
The filming didnt take long so we had plenty of time to log and capture the film. Once up to the editing suite thats exactly what we started to do. When taking a look at the whole footage me and patrice realised that we had alot more than we thought we did. Which isnt a bad thing, its just really hard to choose which bits of the footage will definatly be in the thriller as we had to remember that we only have two minutes to fill.
Once we were done logging and capturing we started to edit. We started with the opening scenes of the stalker watching the park from the bushes and other various shots. So far we have a rough guide of what we are doing, but we do need to cut down alot of shots. Therefore next lesson that is exactly what we will be doing. To make sure we definatly get this finished on time me and patrice have also decided to meet up and come into the workshop over half term so that we are not left to far behind on the work.

filming for thriller

In todays lesson we strated filming our thriller. me and patrice met at the locaion we had all decided on. It was a local park that is always empty during the day. Seen as how the thiller is about a little boy and his mother in the park being watched having a little brother to play the part really helped. the first shots we used were the establishing shots of the park. Not all the shots were in oreder as we were filming then because when we were filming we were constantly coming up with better ideas for camera shots. Many of these shots included and extreme close up of my and my little brother holding hands to show the close bond between us both, another shot was a hand held shot from the stalkers point of view watching my little brother play. There were many close ups of me and my brothers faces to show that we were having a good time. The close ups of my brothers face show his innocence. Shots such as these capture the viewers attention because they are heartwarming but seeing them from the stalkers point of view makes then more intense.
We managed to film the whole scene of my little brother playing in the park, and we even managed to get him pulling a face that made him looked scared and slightly shocked. In our next lesson we will have to get the rest of the film. This will be the stalker walking through the bushes. Lots of close ups and extreme close ups of the stalker pushing away branches and creeping through the bushes will really keep the viewer on the edge of their seat.
once we have captured all we need we will then go to the editing suite and start to edit.

Making the pitch

In thursdays lesson we had to show our pitch to the rest of the class.
We basically had to tell the rest of the class what we were going to be doing in our thriller. We told them about our plan with the camera work and how it could create more tension. We spoke about our plan to hide the identity of our stalker to also create suspense. Once we told the class what we were going to be doing and had told them the storyline it was then time to get the feedback on what they thought. Some people asked questions such as who would play the characters and who would be filming. We also got some good tips on how to makes the thriller more tense by the use of camera work.
In our next lesson we will be filming. We will get our shots of a little boy and a mother beging watched in a park.
To get the shots of a stalker hiding in bushes we may have to go to a different location and do a second session of filming to get it.

thriller video practice- complete

In todays lesson we worked on our pitch. We wrote down everything we could about what our thriller was going to be like. This included the camera work, music, location, lighting and which audience it will be made for. On a big sheet of paper me and my group wrote down our ideas. Then i drew up a storyboard of what our thriller will look like. Hopefully not the same because in the storyboard there are stick people but hopefully the same camera shots and angles will be used in our thriller. This is just a rough guide, maybe when we actually come to filming wmay come up with better ideas but its good to have a few good ideas to start off with.

Once we finished the pitch, Ahmed and AB, finished off some of their blogging whilst me and patrice finished editing the practice thriller. We had nearly finished editing when we went to media workshop but we run out of time so we only needed five minutes or so to finish it. once the clip was ready we decided to add some music to it all. Findind the right music to match the sequence was quite hard but also quite funny as there were so many outrageous sounds to choose from. When we finally found the type of music that matched the film, we added it to the sequence so that when the film played the musci played with it.

Overall with the filming and the sound the clip look very good in the end and is seen at the top ofthis page.

In next lesson we will be doing our pitch to the rest of the class. And hopefully by next week we will start filming our thriller.

Practice filming

On our practice filming session we had to establish a man walking up the stairs and then walking towards a room where he opens the door and walks in. Then we have another character sitting down on a chair and waiting for the man to sit down in his opposite direction. We also had to length out into 20 shots. This was the hard bit of the task, because the opening scene that we were given was too short to be long. But because the scene was taking place on a staircase and room, we did't had to do any preparations. The camera work was very well, but our problem and only mistake was that we took too many short shots. Its was better to have a bit more of long and continous shots. One thing we have also learned when taking the shots was not to use zoom in which is hardly ever used in any film. I was happy with the long and over the shoulder shots which looked very effective and were the most succesful ones. When it came to the editing, we had to delete a lot clips as we took too many, but obviously we kept all the good ones. We were all a bit confused with the editing, but with a little help of the teacher, it all worked out well. To make our short film more interesting, we had to cut many parts of clips. This was effective as it made the film more sense. We did manage to create element of suspenses as we used many different shots. We did't really forget to do anything as we even had to much shots. I dont think we managed to make it realistic as in a real thriller film. This was probably because of it being a short film. We didn't really have any feedbacks from our teacher as we were given the tasks in groups and had to do it without really any help from the teacher. My feelings for this short task was that we could have done it much better if we probably just had more time. But it was a good experience before a real AS thriller film and i have learned a lot of mistakes which will hopefully not happen in the real thriller.

13th jan Thriller excercise

13th jan

In today's lesson we a were asked to create a short film which included someone walking down a coridoor and entering a room where another person was sitting, we then had to create dialogue between these two people. In my group we decided to add mystery to the film by keeping the main character's identity a secret, we did this by using close ups of the feet whilst he was walking, we then took an over the shoulder shot of the main character, this showed the character from the back, then to add further suspense we did a slow tilt pointing the camera up to finally reveal him.
During the sequence of the film we used variety of shots which included, tacking , still low angle, tilt, over shoulder, extreme close ups, point of view shots and high angle shots these all created more tension and excitement for the audience. Once we had filmed all of our shots we went to the editing suite , first we selected the most effective and significant shots as we had twenty - four shots and the maximum we were allowed to use was sixteen, we then arranged them chronologically and made cuts so that we could string them together.

PREPARATION FOR PITCH

We were set a task to make a thriller that will make the target audience aske a question in other word to create suspence on the target audience on thursday the 15th and on monday 20th january, we had to plan how we are going to create and make up another thriller .At firs it wasn't that easy to think of one but we made our way throught in thinking about how our thriller we be.
We decided that the central plan of our thriller is going to be a child being the main character, the play is about a child and the mother being watch by a stalker which his face will never be shown, after that we view the stawkers feet and the body on the playground. The mother looks away by the time she looks up at the child there is a shocked when she looks at his face.

KEY IMAGE: The image of our Thrilleris the view of the playground ,this could be called an establishing shot then we moved on by showing the surroundings of the park which bring us back to the stalker's feet. Here we made full use of a close up shots to create an effect of the character.

SETTINGS AND LOCATION:like mentioned above we have decided we are going to make a playground which is empty to be the location ,there are also going to be bushes and lots of greenary in that playground this props will make our thriller maor effective this ould also create tention and suspence to the audience because they might be wa^ting for what will happen to the child by the surroundings view.We will also make the time a day time ,which no will be there .

LIGHTING:Because all the film will be done outside ,we have decided to make the lightning all natural.

CAMERAWORK:On the camera work which are going to marked on the most ,we started with an establishing shot of the playground this will create the POINT OF VIEW of the stalker,if we are lucky ,if it sunny on our filming day,it will be very helpful on on create a lightning effect,we will take a shot of the stalker's shadow walking past the railings this will be used by TRACKING .There will be a be a close up of the stalker walking throught the bushes ,only his feet will be shown on this part, this cold also be filmed by using TRACKING which also create suspence on the audience. After that there will be a long shot of the mother and the child walking into the park, also there will be a mid shot of the child playing in the playground .There will also take a POV shot of the stalker watching and a close up shot of the mother looking away.Lastly, we will take an Extreme close up shot of the child face ,this will show the mood of the child and this facial expression.

MUSIC:There are going to be a lot of sound effect .Fistly, there will be a sounds of the stalker walking through the bushes .Then a sound of the child laughing as this carries on there should be an intence of the music when the stalker is viewed.

AUDIENCE:As a thriller movie which may frighten kids and youths under the age of 18.This as giving us the opportunity to make the audience of our thriller 18+.

TITLE:We haven't decided what to call our thriller but it might be name it CHILED EYE.

Preparation for pitch

In this task where me and my group had to prepare the makings of the pitch. It is important to be organised and plan things out before handing out the work. A short brief of what is going to happen in our opening seqeunce is a mother and her child alone in a playground, but what they dont know is that they are being stalked by a man. There is going to be a moment where the mother is going to look away and once she looks back at her child, she will see her son shocked and scared. This is basically our central plan in our project. The key images you will see in our opening seqeunce is a view of the playground with just the mother and her child. We will also film the surroundings and the stalkers feet walking up to the playground in the bushes. This will let the audience know where the opening seqeunce is taking place and who the main characters are. The opening seqeunce will take place in an emmpty playground where there are a lot of bushes which is in advantage for the stalker. The camera will also focus on the greenary of the playground. Our opening seqeunce will hopely take place on a windy and sunny daytime. The lighting of the opening seqeunce should be all natural as it will be filmed on daytime. Things that we are planning to film when it comes to camerawork are establishing shots of the playground, there will also be a point of view of the stalker to make the scene more interesting and exciting. By gods will, if it is a sunny day with a lot of sunshine, we will take shots the stalkers shadow past the tracking railings. The stalkers identity will be covered at all time to make the opening seqeunce a bit mysterious. A close-up on the stalkers feet walking through the bushes which creates suspense, this will happen by tracking. After, we're going to take a long shot of mother and child walkinh into the park. A mid-shot of the child playing on the playground should be fine. As the stalker is watching the mother and her child, we will take a point of view shot. Then there wil be a close-up on the mother looking away for a moment. After the close-up, you will see an extreme close up on the childs face and what you can see is fear in his eyes. When it comes to music, we will have sounds of the stalker walking through the bushes. You will also hear the child laughing. The music should become more intense when we see the stalker. We are mainly focusing on an audience which is 18 and older. These are basically all the things that are going to happen in our opening seqeunce. We are also going to make a short storyboard which is like a brief, but in more details. We haven't really decided on what we are going to name our title yet, but an idea is to call it ''Child's Eyes".

Making of Thriller.

On Tuesday media class where everyone is settled down ,our teacher Andrew told us to start filming and do the neccessary things that had to be done.We had to make make 16 different shots ,mathc themtigether and make one We went to the Media office with the usage of our media card to collect all the instruments which are going to be needed for the film production, these contain the camera which we had already leant how to operate, and the tripord. We started with an establishment shot, then we carried on by filming the main character,i played that part.We film him walking up a stairs with a close up shot, then carried on by the him walking towards a room .Mostly close up and long shots were used on our project this made it effective because it shows the facia expression and body language.

After filming we went to our teacher to see us throught if have done the right thing ,with the help of the teacher we were able to correct what we had filmed wrong. After finish filming we EDIT it .

EDITING: In editing we had to put these the films together in order of how it the film should be ,we did a match cut of the recorded film and match them up together. When we finish doing that we played everything to see if we have match them corrrectly,it was quite fortunate that we had done the right things.

Planning how to make our own thriller.Match cut effect

On thursday we were introduced a new teacher called Annabell. Annabell told us the terminology of how to blogg our work .In that lesson we leant how to create a match cut effect ,this is cobining two shots together to make a sensable or complete film.We did mostly paperwork. At first we had a go at answering some question which contain imagining and creating a match scenes in our head and matching them together with our the question she gave us .We were put in our groups to be able to do that classwork ,my group put heads together in solving out the question ,however we did our best to do the task set ,it was quit fortunate that when the answer was shown to us we were right on the spot.
After we had a go of doing that ,we were given a sheet to plan what our thriller is going to look like ,in my group ,group 7 we planned what scene is going to come first and how they are going to come in order ,everyone in my group had a say about it which was very helpful to us,we had to draw a picture of how the scenes look like this as well helped us to make our film easy and quicker to produce. However, we were very successful at that task and the time was against us so we rounded u and determine that we re going to start filming in our next lesson ,on tuesday.

Thriller example for our Thriller Production.

8 october 2009
Just before chrismas, we were shown in the class a thriller film,SHINNING the film contain different types of shots which created a lot of effect for the film ,the film was fascinating and exciting because it was made with different types of shots e.g Panning ,cloe up shot ,mediul long shot over head shot e.t.c.
After this our teacher Andrew, showed us last year media student thiller make ,he showed us what the mistakes are and the good of part of their thriller. In my own opinion,it has inspired everyone to work harder in the task that has been set before us.

filming and editing

In yesterdays lesson we got to film. All the planning we did got put to use. Once we all made sure we had planned everything carefully we got a camera and a tripod and chose a spot where to film. Seen as how the clip would be about someone walking into a room and stiiting down to have a conversation, me and my group decided that it would be best to film it all in our media classroom.
Once the camera was set up we could start filming. The first shot we done was an establishing shot to show the viewer where all of this was happening. After this shot we decided that the next shot would be a close up of the first persons feet goin up a flight of stairs. This type of shot just showing the feet created alot of tension. To create more tension and suspense we decided that we would not show the first persons face until he actually walks into the room. This means that the first few shots would be close ups of feet and tracking shots of the person walking up to the door. Once the first person was in the room we sdecided now to focus on the second person. To still keep the suspense we had a close up of the second persons eyes. once the first person sat down oppsite the second person we decided to use over the shoulder shots when they were talking.
Once we were satisfied with waht we had filmed we had to go to the editing suite and upload the video. We aranged the clips in a rough order on final cut pro then placed them on the line in the order they will play in.once they were all on the line we then decided to cut little bits of the clips so that they will all blend in nicely. By the end of this lesson we succesfully managed to complete the beginging of the film. We even put a match cut in . Now in next lesson we will have to finish editing the rest of the film.

Monday 12 January 2009

match cuts

On fridays lesson we had a new teacher introduced to us. Her names was annabell. In this lesson we learned about match cuts.
A match cut is basically when two shots can be put together and make one. This lesson was mostly paperwork, but to get an even better understanding of what a match cut is we all watched a short clip and had to spot the match cuts.
Once we watched this clip and fully understood what a match cut was we then had to start planning our match cut exercise.
In this exercise we will be in groups and we will have to film a character opening a door, walking into a room, sitting down opposite another character and then both of them sharing a few lines of dialoue. In this exercise we have to plan the shhot carefully so in order to do that we first had to write all of our shots down on paper, then draw them of how they will look. Next lesson we will actually get to be filming this exercise.

Making Thriller

CAMERA USAGE
When we first started to discuss about how we are going to make our thriller,we were shown in the class how to use a camera and the Tribod stand, we were shown by the media department teacher how to operate the camera and how to organise the tripord stand. We learnt that day how to use different types of shots to create different effect in when we are making our video, shots like low angle shot ,high angle shot, reverse shots ,close up shot ,medium shots etc, gives a thriller a entising effect and mode .After showing us how to do these things we were splitted in groups of four to practice using cards there were four people in a group. My group is Cassie,Hammed and Patrice. In my group we discuss how to make our thriller video more effective and how its going to get us good grades.

CARD PRACTISE
In my group we had decided how we are going to practise the filming so that we can all know how to use the camera and the tripord set up,we decide that we are oing to take turns in filming while the other play the cards ,it was quit unfortunate Hammed wasn't in on that day because it was a muslim celebration day,but anyway, we started filming by Patrice going first while me and Cassie play the card .She took hihg angle shots ,low angle shots and the close up shots of the hands and the cards...it all went around. We cleared up the tripor and the camera carefully to avoid the damge of the instruments and submit our work.

Pa Trice Neita- 6th January 09

6th January 09

Today we looked at a documentary called "Watching" created for the BBC presented by Thomas Sutcliffe, this focused on the opening of thrillers, I remember the opening of 'the shining', we looked at the opening extract where a car is driving through greenery where a crane shot is used, it is as if we are chasing the car, this extract was likened to a predator in pursuit of its prey as the tension begins to build up in between sots of the car and the scenery, this was done through using various extreme long shots, low camera angles, crane shots and interior shots.
We were also shown a classic film called  'A Touch of Evil', the director Orson Welles's aim was to bring the audience straight into the film by not having opening credits, by doing this it would look as if the film was reality, he explained that his idea was not taken into consideration as Universal Studios put in opening credits, which Welles claimed to be less effective.

practice with the cameras-cards

In todays lesson we had a taste of how it would be to film a short clip. We were all put into groups. In these groups we were showed how to work the camera and set up the tripod. We learnt how to put a new tape in the camera and work the basics of how to turn it on and off and record.
We now know what a thriller is because we have all as a class watched one. We watched the shining during one of our lessons. We all took notes on things such as the camera work, editing, and the sound. These are all important when creating a thriller. They all help create tension and suspense. Watching this film helped us by giving us ideas for when it comes to doing our thrillers, however we must first have a practice at using the cameras.
In our groups we were given a pack of cards, a camera and a tripod. We were told to got off and create a short film that would have a minimum of twelve shots. Everyone went there separate ways, some even went outside to film, but me and my group decided to stay inside and film.
We decided as a group that our short film would be about two people playing cards. The idea of just playing cards did seem quite boring so we decided to add in a number of different camera shots to make it look and seem more tense. we used many different types of camera shots. The ones which made the short film seem more tense have got to be the close ups of the cards and close up of the peoples faces. The close up of the faces showed a lots of tension because of the facial features. The close up of the eyes was really good and tense as the eyes show the most emotion!
Once we had all of our shots we to the camera and the equipment into the editing suite.
There we uploaded the shots onto the computer. Once on the computer we had to arrange the shots so that mey made a short film. This means we had to cut and name all the shots then place them on a line in order. This line shows which order they will play in, so the one at the top will be first and the one at the end will be last. Once we placed all the shots in the order we liked best we had then created a short film.
