Evaluation

In the thriller project, my group have made an opening sequence about child abduction. We have 3 characters in the opening sequence; mother (Cassie), child and stalker (Abu Bakar). In our opening sequence, we are focusing on 2 parts, which is the part of the stalker and the part the child and the mum. To make our product as relative and realistic as possible, it had to go through many editing, camera shots, adding and featuring with the help of the Mac OS X. In the opening sequence we have two a mixture of sounds. Like when the camera is on the stalker, we have non-diegetic sounds. But when it comes to the mother and child we have normal diegetic sounds of like when the child is playing and when the mother is laughing even when there is a small concentrated amount of non-diegetic sounds. You have this in many opening sequences of real life thriller films. This method has a curious effect on the audience, these simple edits are what makes the audience want to watch the rest of the film and catches their interest. Editing credits is also another convention, which is used in many films and there is also an impact of relativity to real media. It can give many opening sequences an effect depending on where and what part of the opening sequence you display it. This can be simply created with the help of the Live Type. In our media product where we hide the identity of the stalker, this has another affect of questioning the audience and gets them curious as well. The mother in our media product is very young, this can challenge many media sources of stereotyping young mothers. I believe all these points I have mentioned is what makes a real media product. Using the simple dramas that happen in reality is what you can use or manipulate to produce your own real media.

As I said before, the mother in the opening sequence looks quiet young and reality she is just the elder sister of the little child. But the audience will believe that she is teenager who somehow became a mother at an early age. These thoughts can lead to stereotyping teenagers in the urban area that give birth in an early age. You wont have these kind of situations or drama happening in on the country site. Another stereotypical moment is the blacked out stalker. Many stalkers in real life dress dark close or camouflage to fade away in their surroundings and they dress like this, because it gives them an advantage to make a quick escape and on top they where gloves obviously to leave no fingerprints. Stalkers can make scene look very mysterious which is what many audience get interested and curious in. Again as every stalker, we have a male stalker. It would be very unusual if the stalker is a female.

If we made a film out of our opening sequence, it wouldn’t be really and internationally distributed film. The reason for this is simply because our film just focuses on common problems that occur in the urban world. If anything, it would be based in the UK. It wouldn’t really catch the interest of the big 6 multi million distributors such ‘universal pics’. It would be a reasonable film to release a little preview on the internet like YouTube or MySpace. This can be useful for promotion or even research before starting a proper film, which would hit box offices. After wesee a good success in the cinemas, it would not be a bad idea to record it on DVD’s.
A relevant audience for this kind of film would be teenagers living in the urban areas and also middle-aged adults, single parents, mum dad etc. All people in the middle class section can afford a little ticket to the cinema. Why not even people such as a couple who are on a date on a Friday or Saturday night out in central London and walk past the cinema and see this big billboard saying ‘ Happily Ever After’. When it comes to gender, it does make a different like for the female section might be more interested a film involving and starring a mother and the relationship between her and her son. Do not forget that the film ends with the shocked face of the child. Let us just say for example a student named Mary studying her A-levels and has a part time job in Oxford Street at H&M and it is a Friday the day she is paid and goes out with her friends from college. Plus the usual thing they do on a Friday is go to the cinemas Hollywood, CineWorld , or the VUE you name it. They are going to want to watch one of the latest films released and you have the big billboard poser saying ‘Happily Ever After’.

The most suitable promotion for this film is probably billboards, posters, internet etc. The genre of the film could be popular at that moment in the market and could be filling gaps. Another way could be handing out leaflets to aware people on the streets like London. If the film did catch the eyes and attention of big companies and organisations, then it would be more effective to get star actress to lead the mother figure. A good star such as Keira Knightly would be perfect because of her British urban accent and middle aged motherly figured body. She also looks vey interesting when she is in fear, which is one of her strongest features, especially when she pulls that sexy emotional face. This can probably complete the films requirements.

Making this opening sequence has been a great educable experience and got me to learn about the film producing industry. First, I thought it would take months to make the opening sequence because usually a normal can take years to complete. Another thing that was very great was all those technologies we got to use. Such as the camera we use to film and all its different features and methods of recording. The second film was taking the clips back to rooms where all Apple Macs were, which was where we got to use the LiveType and SoundTrack to edit, cut, give special affect and credits to each clip. And at the end where we composite all the films, where the final bit was added was what made the whole opening sequence look very professional and like a real film. Obviously, we also had to use the internet for blogging keeping the audience up to date with everyday’s process and struggles. Blogging isn’t really something for because it involves relating media to journalism which are two different worlds to me. The basic result was that to make a great film or any film you will need teamwork, great communication and a force of commitment, which keeps a group together, even after arguments. Everyone has a role to stick to in a group and if you don’t you will let down the whole group, which can end up fatale. The best thing to do was to show dedication and the willing to learn and even make mistakes and pick up from them mistakes. You should also make every day, hour, minute, second, step as educable as possible. This is all what makes a great film and should go for every other subject. Know that technology is the main essence of making as relative as possible. I do not think without the Apple Mac it would have been possible to create the opening film.

shot list blog

27th January

Today me another member of my group met in Mare Street to film half of the opening of the group thriller, since two members of the group did not show up I did the filming and the other group member acted with her younger brother. We chose to film in a children’s playground as we wanted to capture innocence in our thriller. During the filming we captured a range of shots, some of these included extreme close ups, extreme , long shots, mid shots, tracking , panning and hand held camera.
We filmed a series of scenes which included an establishing shot, the child playing on the slide etc, the child and its mother holding hands and walking into the park and also clips from the p.o.v. of the mother and of the stalker in the bushes. These shots were vital in building suspense.
When we had finished the filming we returned to college to begin uploading our footage to the computer.

thriller evaluation

Thriller Evaluation
I feel that my media thriller uses the traditional conventions of a thriller because, it has various methods of suspense, i.e. the first scene of the thriller opening introduces the setting there is a slow panning shot used to introduce the empty park, the audience anxiously wait to see a character introduced. There was added suspense in the thriller as the ‘predator’/stalker’s identity is revealed slowly, first we see footsteps in a park, an extreme close up is used and loud digetic sound of the stalker’s feet crunching on twigs is used to highlight the fact that danger is expected. We also have several point of view shots which is usually common amongst thrillers as this is known to build tension specifically when the audience know that danger alerts, we have point of view shot throughout the film, this is mostly used when the stalker watches the child from behind the bushes. The non digetic sound to emphasise the different points of view is also used, when we are seeing things form the stalkers view behind the bushes very intense harsh but also slow sound is used, but when we see things from the child’s point of view a gentle, soft mellow sound is used like a nursery rhyme, this highlights the child’s vulnerability, I feel that the hit film, ‘http://www.google.co.uk/url?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dsfout_rgPSA&ei=RurMSfiSL8i4jAef8ozlCQ&sa=X&oi=video_result&resnum=5&ct=thumbnail&usg=AFQjCNFGxz3mH-pvVjtkmuATL2gZ34PPhwThe Shining influenced my thriller as in the Shinning there were various point of view shots used whilst the boys was being followed, this is similar to the young boy being watched by the stalker behind the bushes in my thriller.
In my thriller, there is a young child who the audience is left to assume is to be abducted, but hints are in place which lead the audience to think that the person watching this child intends to cause harm. The stalker is a young black male who in modern society is stereotypically most likely to commit crimes . “There have been many well-publicised cases around the country, where gangs of youths have terrorised housing estates or individual youngsters have wreaked their own brand of havoc on areas.” This quote was taken from :http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/1932803.stm.The child is very young and vulnerable, these two roles live up to many common stereotypes.
The best suited media institution for this thriller would be a small independent release in the U.K., this would be because the filming quality would be more suited to this, I don’t believe that the filming equipment provided for us was some thing that could be used to produce a big Hollywood Blockbuster I would also want this to be a small independent release in the UK because I feel that the British public would be able to relate to the thriller more and lots of profit from the thriller would be made because of this, If this was to be released in Hollywoood money would be lost as the settings and scenarios would only pertain to the British public, non of the aspects of this thriller are universal, as a result of this I feel that the best distribution for this thriller would be a small independent release in the U.K.. The equipment for a Hollywood blockbuster would have been far more expensive and as a result of this would have been able do far more developed to do this, we also didn’t have the funding to produce something for the big screen as we are doing this for a college project and a by recent research I have done I have found that Hollywood blockbusters need millions even sometimes billions to produce a film of such substantial quality.
The target audience for this thriller would be a working class teenager (student) living in London, this would be because the cast of this thriller were from the same background, the audience would find the surroundings and the cast familiar and it could be something they could relate to, if an upper middleclass C.E.O. ,living in Kensington was to watch this thriller opening, they may not find it as interesting as there would be nothing that they could relate to, this could include the surroundings, i.e. the park with graffiti or littered floor, they also may not be able to relate to the situation, or this may not have any significance to them. Someone who I feel would be the ideal target audience for this thriller would be a working class teenager (17) living in East London who enjoys watching thrillers or horror movies maybe a girl who is a tom boy.

If this thriller was to become a hit I would choose to advertise it in on public billboards in high streets and prime shopping locations, to attract teenagers. I would also like to advertise my thriller through TV advertisements specifically on channels that are most watched by teenagers, music channels, i.e. mtv base, trouble etc. I would also post messages on websites such as MySpace and face book where millions of teenagers visits and log onto every day. I would also put posters outside prime fast food restaurants such as K.F.C. Mc Donald’s, Burger King were many teenagers visit on a daily basis. I would also want to advertise this thriller opening in cinemas before opening credits of other horror or thriller films.
During the making of this thriller, I have learned how to use a camera and a tripod effectively. To set up a tripod securely (also able to hold a camera), How to film using the five second rule. I have learned how to record regular blogs and to plan the lessons ahead, i.e. during the making of this thriller opening, I have had to meet up with the other members of my group in and out of my lesson time, we have had to arrange locations where we could meet to film the sequence. Then I learned how use final cut pro to upload shot footage onto the computer, then to log and capture, then finally to adjust images in slow motion, to add special effects, to cut and insert scenes into chronological order, and to put appropriate music and sound effects on that match the thriller sequence to create suspense and tension.
Looking back at planning this thriller opening, I feel that a lot has been learned, in the beginning my group and I made a storyboard, this consisted of drawing boxes and putting detailed pictures in chronological order of the sequence we would eventually put together, some things that we planned to put in our sequence, were not actually in our thriller opening, this was for various reasons due to the fact that we only had two minutes to fit everything in, i.e. we originally planned to have the child abducted by the stalker, however at the end of our thriller we decided to leave it to our audience to guess what happened by ending with an extreme close up of the child with a very frightened and shocked look on his face. The audience could either believe that the child had seen something which frightened him or was eventually approached by the stalker, this was also for added suspense. My group and I had expected that two minutes would be more than enough for filming, this was when we were planning ,however when we started filming we found it very difficult to condense the footage we had taken down to two minutes. We were very ambitious and had many good ideas, but when it came to filming, many of our ideas and shots had to be taken out to shorten it. Filming time was less than we had initially expected, we were told that we would need four hours of filming time, instead in total we only did one hour of filming.

thriller evaluation

Before making our thriller there was a long process of planning and practicing before we could create the final project. Although the planning did take quite some time without is we wouldn’t have known what to do when it came to filming the thriller. Before we went straight into making the thriller our first task was to watch some documentaries and take notes on things such as edits, sound and camera shots. Although it may seem fun to be spending our media lesson watching television it was also very hard as there was a lot of paperwork and written work to do. Even watching the documentaries was sometimes tricky as we were not actually watching them; we were observing them and having to take notes constantly. Apart from watching documentaries we also watched thrillers such as ‘The Shining’ which helped us to understand thrillers a little more easily.

We learned many different types of thrillers such as action thrillers, crime thrillers, horror thrillers etc. By learning that there were many different types of thrillers it helped us to decide what kind of thriller ours would be. Once we knew what kind of thriller it was going to be it was time to start planning it. Firstly we had to practice using the cameras. To get this practice we made a couple short films. The first one was with cards in which we focused on different camera shots used to get the best effect. In this lesson we also learned how to edit. The second film was about opening a door and walking into a room. In this filming we focused more on ‘match cuts’. These short films were a success. They even helped us to understand the Apple Mac computers a little more as these computers are a bit more advanced to what I am normally used to.

Before making the thriller we had to pitch our ideas to the class first and get their feedback on what they thought of it. To film the thriller we had to use two locations, but when looking at the thriller it looks like one. This was done by editing. Without learning the basic skills on the practice films we would have not been able to make the thriller.

Before the thriller was made we also had to think about the basic things such as mise- en – scene. We decided to film the thriller in a park. To make the park more intense it had to look neglected therefore we had to film early in the morning when nobody was there. Having an empty park really helped with the camera shots. Because it was empty we could have long shots of the park showing that is was neglected. Even when doing close ups it was good to not have any random people walking behind or in front of the camera.

Using things such as final cut pro, live type and soundtrack seemed really hard at first because we had never used them before, however by using them when making the other films we had a basic idea of how to use them and it progressed from there. Once the editing was done the thriller had to be put onto a ‘blog’, which is also new to me as I have never used it before, however it was very simple to use. By doing this thriller I have learnt how to film edit and blog, which to me before all seemed quite challenging.
Our thriller also represents social groups. There is a stalker who we immediately assume is male, stereotyping men as stalkers. The other representation is the sister and the boy. Most people would see it as a young teenage mother and child. The audience will obviously see it differently to what I see it because they immediately want to stereotype everyone they see.

The ideal audience for this thriller would be for anyone really, preferably for people over the age of 18 though as the may be some scenes in the thriller that may not be suitable for younger viewers. Anyone over the age of 60 I think would not really enjoy this type of film, the ideal age would be someone in there early to mid twenties. A typical person who fits into our target audience would be ‘Claire 20 is at university studying to be a primary school teacher and loves adding new DVD’s to her collection. Rather than being out every night she would rather snuggle up at home with some popcorn and watch a good movie.’ Or possibly ‘ Dave 26, works in retail and enjoys playing football on Saturdays, but also likes going to the cinema and watching a good scary film, his favorite type of films are horror thrillers. These kind of ideal people who fit our target audience seem more like working class to middle class people rather than upper class.

If this thriller was to be distributed, I do not think it would be a big Hollywood blockbuster. I think it would only be seen and heard of is if it went straight to DVD release. If it was a big movie it would be in the cinema at least however films do not have to be shown in the cinema to be big hits. Films such as football factory proved this theory, as this film went straight to DVD release and is still a very popular film today. Rather than be a well known film all over the world and in Hollywood I think that this type of film will only be well known over in Britain.

To attract our target audience rather than have a big Hollywood star I think just having a famous British actor will suite the film nicely. To advertise the thriller I think it would most likely be advertised on television and on billboards. As its not a big Hollywood blockbuster there would be no need for it to be advertised in the cinema, it will not be known worldwide because of the advertising we
would be using however it would still be known.

Overall I think that making the thriller was a big success and went really well. Watching other thrillers such as ‘The shining’ really helped as well. When watching this film we focused on the things that would keep us on the edge of our seats buzzing with anticipation. These things were things such as chilling music, close ups of the face, extreme close ups of eyes and extreme long shots to show that the characters in the film are alone as there is no one else around them. By learning about these aspects and what affect they have on the audience it helped us to decided which ones to put in our thriller. Just like ‘The shining’ our thriller had the chilling music and the close ups that keep you on the edge of your seat and asking for more. Without having studied other thrillers and taken a closer look into what a thriller must include I do not think that making our thriller would have been achievable.

Thriller Evaluation.

Thriller opening sequence Evaluation.

"Happily Ever After"

In memories to other thrillers that we have been shown by our media teacher – Mr Andrew e.g. The Shining, In which we have also analyse together the useful effect in the thrillers such as Light, Mise-en-scene ,settings and costumes. Also I have seenThe Bourne identity action thriller that I analyzed myself. Watching the real thriller media product, has built up our knowledge of how a thriller should look like and also it give use the experience of how to use thriller effect effectively. After watching these examples, we were asking to make our own thriller effectively, in my group we have made good use of the thriller example which we have been shown.
We have applied techniques such as lightning mise-en-scene, costume and location to our own thriller film in order to create a strong thriller opening sequence which we also think it will challenge the real media products. These effect that my group used ,we believe with the idea that we have been given from other thriller that we have used them appropriately and effectively where they are all needed so that it will make it look like thriller made by professionals. In the Shinning that we have watch, we see how they use different types of shots like the bird’s eye view, long shots to create a marvellous effect. Also I have watch one other thriller film, The borne identity and analyze the effect as an extra work to give me more understanding of how to use these effects. This has been applied to our thriller opening sequence to make it professional also watching other thriller mention above has help us to choose the best location for our thriller, we chose a park with a lot of bush in it for our location which reminds me of Grizzle park the thriller movie. The location of the bush can be seen as part of our Mise-en-scene because the effect that it created for thriller is seen as a perfect example of a mise-en-scene that a thriller should have.
My group has use different camera shots to build up some effect in our thriller. We used close-up shot in order to see closely the expression our characters. Using all these affect for our thriller opening sequence which we have placed in order which they are meant to be, I think there should be a great competition between our thriller film and some other thriller movie made by professionals or the thrillers which we have been given example of in the lesson because there is effect that they have use in there thriller movies that we also haven’t use when necessary. Therefore, I think there should be no big different between our thriller and the real thriller.
However, the representation of our media product has created an immense importance effect to be able to manipulate the taste of our target audience. In our thriller we have use the contrast of people with a huge age gap to make our audience feel remorse for the victim of our thriller .Basically, we used a little boy of the age of 6 whose race is white who is been watch by a black big guy (stalker) whom age prediction is 18, so there is good contrast representation of our characters .This little boy playing with his mum in the park which they were both being watch by this gigantic black guy. The contrast characters will help put the audience in suspense of what is going to happen to this happy family. In addition, the little boy in our thriller looks vulnerable because of his age; the impression that the little boy is innocent will come to the thought of our audience. Also there is going to be a stereotype comment from the audience about the big guy (stalker) in our thriller.
Looking back to our media product, we can see that it has different important races (black and white) in the movie; this may help our product to get pass UK and may be distributed around the world by the Hollywood blockbuster. Also we have use the effect which may also be use by the Hollywood film production, there should be an acceptance of our thriller product because of the content and the effect we have use in it. Also it should be on a DVD release and it should also be shown in the cinemas because my group has made this in a professional structure.
We’ve based out target audience to those who consume media product ,those who go to cinema ,couples could be seen as an example of our target audience ,because when they go to a place like the cinema to watch our thriller ,if they get to the effective part of the thriller when watching it ,this may give them the motion of cuddliness if the female gets carried away by the movie as we all know that men are stronger them women. Also our media production is targeting to the audience of the age of 13 and above because children below this age might find it stronger for them to watch. Our thriller is both for male and the female but mostly for the female, also our opening sequence may attract the middle class because of the characters we have use in the film.
The character in our thriller opening sequence will help attract out various audience. The little vulnerable boy which we have used in our thriller opening will create a sympathetic sensation towards the innocent boy, this will make them carry on watching our movie to know what is going to happen to the little boy, In contrast they will also want to know what happen to the stalker whether he gets arrested or he survive in what he is up to. Also this will put our audience in suspense of what will be the reaction of the boy’s mum. Putting all these establishments of our thriller suspense together it should be able to attract a huge collection of people.
To help market our thriller we could make the trailer of our thriller, then put it on the phone and send it to friends and family or we could also advertise this in every UK cinema for people that love going to the cinema see it also we could spread the news with the word of mouth. Lastly, because there is a huge amount of people who uses the internet these days, we could advertise our thriller on the internet campaign, taking all this procedure is sure that our thriller opening sequence will be popular and be profitable for us.
After construction this media opening sequence product, We had learnt a lot about technologies .I have learnt how to use the camera to take different types of shots e.g. Long shot bird’s eye shot etc. also We have learnt how to film with timing and what location suits different film product .We have also learnt how to set up Tripod and how to change the height when needed. In addition, it has helped me to build up my acting experience which could also be used whenever a task that includes acting is been set. Even though, there were some problem when using Final cut pro, Livetype and the soundtrack. We have been able to pass through the task. With these difficulties that we had face during the Final cut pro, Livetype and soundtrack at least that gave us the experience of how to use these things. Also, we have an experience on how to edit and choosing the right sound for our thriller.
The internet has been so useful for us, it has helped us to be able to put out shots through it and also help us to be able to edit the shots which we have taken .We’ve been able to download our Final cut into our blog up plans and also this could be transfer to YouTube which if it does, it will expand the prospective audience for our media product.
Finally, I have learnt a lot from this task, starting from how to bring up an idea of a thriller or any other movie genre. When my group was making plans of what our opening sequence is going to be. Also during the filming I learned what kind of locations that suits different film genre especially the one which we have just finishes. This recent task has made me understood that when filming you could take a lot of shots and match cut them so that they can make a sense. During the film making process, I have learned how to use different shots and panning and tilting techniques. Though it may be hard getting this things right but has given me the experience of how they are used in case on a similar task that comes my way. This task has given me an interest in media and may also make me carry on in my university levels hopefully.
